This is a list of children’s picture books that are about manners and courtesy. I’ve included these books because, in addition to a positive message, they are fun to read. Some are funny, or have great illustrations, and all of them held my attention and the attention of my kids. I hope you enjoy them, too.
My Dog Never Says Please by Suzanne Williams
A funny story about a girl who is tired of minding her manners and would rather be a dog.
Elbert’s Bad Word by Audrey Wood
This is a funny story about Elbert, who catches a bad word. The Bad word sneaks into his mouth, then pops out at a fancy garden party.
What a Good Lunch! by Shigeo Watanabe Published in 1978
This is a short, simple book that would be good for young children or early readers. It is about a young bear learning to eat at the table, and he makes a mess. This book could be used to talk about table manners.
Rude Giants by Audrey Wood Published 1993
In this story, a couple rude giants move into the neighborhood and irritate the villagers. They want to eat the buttermaid’s cow, and she gives them a lesson in manners.
Whoopi’s Big Book of Manners by Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi addresses all the big transgressions here, and pays special attention to nose picking.
