Here is an activity that teaches tolerance:

  • Have three buckets placed in front of you. One with warm water (about 40° Celsius/60° Fahrenheit), one with cool water (about 20° Celsius/ 68° Fahrenheit), and the last with neutral water (about 33° Celsius/ 91° Fahrenheit).
  • First, you will stick your right hand in the warm water and your left hand in the cool water.
  • After a few minutes, the water temperatures will feel the same to you. Neither of your hands will feel warm or cool. They will just feel like a normal temperature.
  • When this happens, you will stick both hands into the neutral water at the same time.
  • What do you notice? Your right hand, which was in the warm water, now feels cool, and your left hand, which was in the cool water, now feels warm!

This is because your hands get used to a particular temperature. What we are used to seems normal to us. One hand thinks hot water is normal, and the other hand thinks cold water is normal. When they are presented with something new (room temp water), it can feel uncomfortable but if we are open minded and give it time, we will learn to tolerate and accept it, and soon it feels normal, too.
